Fiberglass, also known as Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic, is an amazing material which has found its way into nearly every aspect of our everyday lives. It is a composite material made from a plastic resin which is reinforced by glass fibers which add to the strength and durability of the original plastic material. This process has been used for everything from yachts in Florida, to Formula One cars in Europe and fiberglass doors in Toronto.

Choose this option for long-term reliability and durability.

Steel doors are sturdy and one of the most energy efficient of the different types. As long as the weather conditions aren’t too extreme, steel will not be affected – unlike wood, for example, which can warp when it gets wet. This means that they are less maintenance than most other door types, and they can also be less expensive.

The downsides of steel doors include that they can be easily scratched or dented, which can lead to rust. They are also difficult to stain – unlike other material doors – meaning that they have to be painted, and are also prone to chipping.

Choose this option for the simplicity and affordability.

FIBERGLASS DOORS

Your front door not only keeps out the elements and protects your home from intruders, but it can improve your curb appeal too.

Fiberglass exterior doors are made from a core of rigid insulation, clad with a fiber-reinforced polymer, and covered with an artificial grain to make them look like traditional wood. A new fiberglass front entry door can improve the value of your home by as much as $80,000+.

Manufacturers have gotten so good at mimicking the look and feel of wood that you’d be mistaken for thinking you were handling a solid oak, pine or mahogany door, every time you reach for the handle.

Is fiberglass as strong as steel?

Steel doors are susceptible to dents and scratches which can lead to rust. Fiberglass won’t dent or scratch like steel they also won’t peel or chip like you might see on the lamination surface of steel.

Can fiberglass doors be painted?

If the custom door you ordered is textured - it can be painted or stained. If the fiberglass door has a smooth finish it can only be painted.

Homeowners often choose to stain their textured doors instead of painting to attain that traditional look. While paint covers the door’s surface, a stain brings out the wood-grain characteristics in the door. Whichever you chose, both options are of quality.

How much do fiberglass entry doors cost?

The average cost of fiberglass entry doors is $3,000 on the low end and $13,000 on the high end with other manufacturers/ suppliers.

Most factors that affect the price of fiberglass doors are shape, size, style, paint and finish options, locks and hardware and custom detailing.

STEEL DOORS

Contrary to popular belief,  steel doors are not solid steel.

Steel doors are comprised of either a polyurethane or polystyrene core with a steel skin over the top. These types of doors are most commonly known for their security.  Additionally, steel can be much heavier than most other doors and may require more hinge support to avoid any excessive wear and tear.

Other than the weight factor, steel (as well as any other metal)  is a good conductor of heat and cold. Thermal conduction is not a desired quality for a door - however - but many homeowners still choose this type of door material.

The polyurethane or polystyrene core acts as a thermal barrier inside the steel door.

Studies show that some of these synthetic materials are up to five times better at blocking unwanted heat and cold than most other door materials.

Steel Doors

Where do Steel Doors work best?

Steel doors generally work best as the exterior doors - just as much as fiberglass.

Steel doors are very resistant for the different temperatures and the weather conditions. You can easily use them in the environments with high precipitation and temperatures as they are waterproof. They are durable to rust, cracking and bowing too.

Additionally, they require low maintenance as well as it is possible to prime and paint steel doors.

One of the other, positive steel door qualification is that steel doors save energy. Steel doors have five times higher insulating factor than traditional wooden doors. Steel saves your inner home energy by keeping cold or heat inside and helps you to control the home temperature.

What are some downsides to a Steel Door?

Steel doors' outer shell does not permit sanding and filling with wood putty in the event of scratches or dents.

If anything, we encourage the average customer to consider steel doors as being similar to automobile bodies. The only way to fix a dented or scratched steel door is to use auto body filler such as Bondo, and then sand down to a smooth, paintable surface.

Steel doors often carry the perception of strength against intruders, when in fact they are no better against intruders than quality fiberglass or wood doors.

If a steel door is used with a steel frame, it will be more secure than wood, fiberglass, or steel in a wood jamb/frame.

How much do Steel Doors cost?

Similar to Fiberglass Doors, the average cost of steel entry doors is $2,000 on the low end and $12,000+ on the high end with other manufacturers/ suppliers. Homeowners may consider this option as the most affordable solution to purchasing a new front door.
